Sample Instructional Materials

As a participant in the Fulbright Teacher Exchange program, I designed unit plans and lesson plans. These lessons are here for reference, inspiration, and motivation to find creative ways to make global education a part of your classroom, regardless of subject area. For context, I am a high school English teacher, who created these lessons for my Sophomore students in the San Francisco Bay Area.

International Learning Resources

Here are some organizations and resources that can have immediate impact on your practice and classroom.

Universal Declaration of Human Rights. If we, teachers, are to nurture global citizens, we must teach ourselves and students the definitions, purposes, and implications of human rights and their respective violations. Use this resource to analyze literature, especially the human rights dilemmas faced by characters and created by societies and systems. It is hard to repair and restore something we do not know how to identify or verbalize. Also, use this resource to familiarize students with the mission of the United Nations.

Need funding for professional development? If you have a passion project that will enhance your professional development and teaching practice, consider this resource. Prepare to write a detailed itinerary and purpose statement upon applying.

"IREX works with partners in more than 100 countries in four areas essential to progress: empowering youth, cultivating leaders, strengthening institutions, and extending access to quality education and information." The IREX program can widen your professional network as well as deepen your understanding of global education. This program creates the space and pathways for educators to engage one another globally. Find thought partners from around the world to bounce ideas.

What happens when teachers travel and learn from other teachers from around the world? The Fulbright Teacher Exchanges puts teachers in collaboration and in motion, as American teachers travel internationally to observe and study different schooling models as well as teaching practices. Also, this work is not community service-oriented but rooted deeply in service, service between teachers and service between global citizens. Teachers share practical teaching strategies as well as help one another reimagine and reframe their practice and principles surrounding education through a global lens. What a way to rekindle, refuel, and retool your teaching practice!
